Persistent or severe painPain that interrupts sleep, eating or normal activity should be evaluated.
Swelling or bad tasteSwelling, drainage, foul taste or odor may signal infection around the tooth.
Trouble opening your mouthJaw stiffness, fever, facial swelling or difficulty swallowing warrants urgent attention.
A clear plan—not guesswork

Find out what is causing the pain and what to do next.

Not every wisdom tooth needs to be removed immediately. Your visit begins with an examination and imaging so the dentist can identify whether the tooth is impacted, infected, decayed or damaging a nearby tooth.

  • Thorough evaluation. We assess the tooth position, surrounding bone, nearby teeth and signs of infection.
  • Options explained clearly. You will understand the recommended treatment, expected recovery and fees before moving forward.
  • Care designed around comfort. Local anesthesia and sedation options may be available based on your health, procedure and clinical needs.

Common questions

Wisdom tooth treatment FAQs

Does every wisdom tooth need to be removed?

No. Some wisdom teeth erupt normally and remain healthy. Removal may be recommended when a tooth is impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, difficult to clean or threatening nearby teeth. An exam and imaging are needed to make that decision.

Can you treat an infected wisdom tooth?

We can evaluate the infection, relieve urgent symptoms and determine the appropriate next step. Depending on the situation, treatment may include cleaning the area, medication, removal or referral. Antibiotics alone do not permanently correct the underlying tooth problem.

Will I be awake during wisdom tooth removal?

Many removals can be completed comfortably with local anesthesia. Additional sedation may be available when clinically appropriate. Your dentist will review your health history, the complexity of the procedure and the safest comfort options for you.

How long does recovery take?

Recovery varies with the number and position of teeth removed and your overall health. Swelling and soreness commonly peak during the first few days and then improve. You will receive written aftercare instructions tailored to your procedure.

Can I schedule online?

Yes. Use the online scheduling button to request an appointment at the St. Johns office. For significant pain, swelling or the earliest available appointment, calling the office directly is usually best.

Do you accept Medicaid or HMO plans?

No. Harbour Dental Care is not a Medicaid or HMO provider. Please call the office with your insurance information if you would like the team to help verify available benefits before your visit.
